A UFC newbie's play-by-play of the McGregor/Poirier fight

My husband loves the UFC. As a jiu jitsu enthusiast himself, I have occasionally found myself as a reluctant student in one of his impromptu in-home grappling sessions. While I have a passive interest at best in mixed martial arts, even I have to admit to myself that figuring out how to disable a potential attacker twice my size is a pretty cool feat.

So this past weekend, for no particular reason other than the fact that I was intrigued by the buzz and fanfare surrounding UFC 264, I decided to join my husband and immerse myself in the spectacle main event card: McGregor vs Poirier. As I understand it, the fight didn’t quite live up to the hype that UFC faithfuls had hoped for. Despite this, here is a play-by-play of my thoughts during the short, first-round stoppage fight (spoiler alert for anyone who didn’t watch the fight).

McGregor’s walkout song and overall entrance is pure entertainment...I mean his walk alone is classic!

I feel like I’ve seen this walk somewhere before though 🤔

Poirier’s entrance is not doing it for me! He clearly didn't get the memo that over-the-top entrances are just...better. But the pragmatist in me admires his concentration.

Ok, both guys in the ring...crowd is going nuts, now for the intros. I love the energy of this announcer, he is the real MVP so far! Honestly, this level of enthusiasm can only be matched when the work bestie sends a frantic message that there’s free donuts in the conference room...remember those days?

Alright all the niceties seem to be over. Those entrances took a long time, but I think this fight might actually start now. I’m guessing the fact that they chose not to touch gloves means it's about to go down. LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!

Damn Poirier is really wailing on McGregor. After all the trash talking the Irishman apparently did before the fight, I’m not really seeing what the hype was all for. Seems like Poirier was saving his talking for the ring!

This is an intense fight. I’m exhausted just watching this! Their cardio must be impeccable to fight so many of these five-minute rounds.

First round is winding down and even with my less-than-basic understanding of UFC, Poirier took this one.

JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL...did McGregor’s leg just snap?!?!

Yup! His ankle is definitely not in the right place!!!! I’m tapping out (pun definitely intended) Why is he just sitting there so calmly??? This is a lot…

So everyone else in the ring is just gonna keep on going...announcing the winner and doing the post-match interview as though there isn’t a man with a snapped leg in the corner? Confusion is me! But congratulations to Poirier, especially if McGregor was speaking on his family pre-match...not cool!

Sidenote: Joe Rogan has come a long way from the fear factor days...good for him!

So Joe is going to interview McGregor from the ground? I’m still not over how calm this guy is when his leg literally snapped like a twig mere minutes ago. Am I the only traumatized one???

Did he just say “your wife was in my DMs” to Poirier?! I. AM. DEAD. The audacity of this man is unmatched...sir you literally just broke your own leg and lost a fight but can still find the time for trash talking?!

Phew...this has been a rollercoaster! I’m pretty traumatized, but also highly entertained. Overall fight score for me 7.5/10!
