Over half of Brazil’s 215 million population are Black people, making the country home to one of the largest Black populations in the Americas. Despite this, Black Brazilians still face many socio-economic challenges, and represent approximately 75% of those living in extreme poverty in the country. Against the backdrop of a complex political history and even more layered race relations, a growing cohort of Black social media influencers are using their platforms to create engaging content from their unique perspectives, shine a light on social issues and encourage constructive dialogues.

Ana Paula Xongani: this fearless influencer has amassed a significant following by being outspoken on key issues including feminism, racism and politics. Her love for fashion and healthy living, as well as consistent advocacy for body positivity also feature in her relatable content.

Bianca Santos: a makeup lover at heart, this talented creator’s popularity has recently skyrocketed. With over 800,000 followers on TikTok, her makeup tutorials that feature tips and tricks for people with darker skin are clearly in high demand.

Roger Cipó: this digital creator started important online conversations when he began a campaign to use his platform to increase the followers of other Afro-Brazilian personalities. He openly questioned why profiles of talented Black artists didn’t have the following of their White counterparts: “Why with such undeniable talent and such a great contribution to culture, do they have less than 100,000, 200,000 or one million followers…Only racism explains this.” His campaign to draw attention and raise the profile of Afro-Brazilian musicians, actors and other cultural icons saw many of them gain thousands more followers in short periods of time.

Nathália Rodrigues aka Nath Finanças: discussing “real finance for real people”, this savvy entrepreneur has gained a massive following for her practical and helpful financial content. As someone who originated from a low-income household, her creative content focuses on providing personal finance advice, tips and helpful knowledge for everyday people.
