A Taste of Black Culture with EatOkra

The power of the Black dollar is more than just an abstract concept. A recent Nielsen study found that since the year 2000 Black Americans’ buying power has more than doubled to a staggering $2.1 trillion. Additionally, estimates of the spending power of the wider African diaspora fall in the hundreds of billions. In other words, there is real power and influence that we as a community can wield when deciding where to spend our hard-earned money (just ask Target! 😏)

But the reality is that this influence cannot be truly maximized without intentionality, both individually, and as a collective. So, in an effort to make that intentionality a little more accessible, this Black Business Month we've curated a selection of platforms that have done the heavy lifting by bringing Black-owned businesses together into one marketplace.

EatOkra describes its mission as supporting “a vibrant community of consumers and business owners that honor and preserve the culinary heritage and history of the African diaspora.” EatOkra carefully and intentionally curates Black-owned cuisines from across the globe into one user-friendly platform, making it easier to discover and support Black-owned restaurants. Whether you’re looking for a new favorite spot or want to support local entrepreneurs, EatOkra puts Black food and business at the table.
