Miiriya makes supporting Black-owned businesses simple and impactful

The power of the Black dollar is more than just an abstract concept. A recent Nielsen study found that since the year 2000 Black Americans’ buying power has more than doubled to a staggering $2.1 trillion. Additionally, estimates of the spending power of the wider African diaspora fall in the hundreds of billions. In other words, there is real power and influence that we as a community can wield when deciding where to spend our hard-earned money (just ask Target! 😏)

But the reality is that this influence cannot be truly maximized without intentionality, both individually, and as a collective. So, in an effort to make that intentionality a little more accessible, this Black Business Month we've curated a selection of platforms that have done the heavy lifting by bringing Black-owned businesses together into one marketplace.

Founded by Lamine Loco, a New York-born, Ivorian-Béninois entrepreneur, Miiriya means “thoughts” and “ideas” in his native language Bambara/Dioula. According to Loco, “Miiriya gathers people who believe in ideas, change, and come together as creatives and thinkers to make those ideas come true. It’s a place that aims to provide you with whatever comes to mind.” Another unique and noteworthy feature of the app is the Mutual Aid section that allows the user to donate directly to individual needs in the community.
