We’re back again with our annual good news recap! Although 2023 has been a year filled with some heavy news, there have still been many moments throughout the year that have lifted our spirits and reminded us that changemakers everywhere are still making positive strides.
Sports news: At just 19 years old, tennis superstar Coco Gauff won the US Open defeating Aryna Sabalenka in a dramatic finish. Following her first career grand slam, an emotional Gauff thanked her family, coaching team, supporters and “the people who didn’t believe in me.” She is the first American teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams took the title in 1999.

Technology news: In October, President Biden made history when he signed an Executive Order on the safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of artificial intelligence. For years Dr. Joy Buolamwini, author of Unmasking AI: My Mission to Protect What Is Human in a World of Machines, has been at the heart of advocacy for ethical AI practices. Part of her work involved meeting with President Biden alongside other artificial intelligence experts and critics in a closed-door discussion.

Feel-good news: The social media phenomenons The Ghetto Kids continued to bring joy to the masses through their dancing. These talented kids are some of the beneficiaries of Triplets Ghetto Kids (TGK) a Ugandan NGO with a mission to use music, dance and drama to help disadvantaged, street and orphaned children. The Ghetto Kids electrified the stage of the popular television talent show Britain’s Got Talent, earning the coveted golden buzzer in spectacular fashion.

Music news: Beyoncé’s highly anticipated world tour for her album Renaissance shattered several records. The world tour earned a total of $579 million, cementing it as the highest-grossing tour by a female artist in history. The Renaissance World Tour consisted of 56 shows in 39 different cities. It also broke the record for the largest one-month gross with $127.6 million.
